A new Medicare rule takes effect in January 2009 offering a 2% payment bonus to physicians who use e-prescribing. Electronic prescribing was accepted by Medicare in 2003, yet provider adoption rates have been low.
What is E-Prescribing? It is the process of utilizing software, EMR prescription module or stand-alone prescribing system, to write and transmit a prescription electronically to the pharmacy of the patient’s choice.
Provider reasons for slow adoption have been system costs, lack of incentives and the fear of being slowed down. Providers should focus on what can be gained:
- Safety – accurate and complete list of medications for the patient
- Error Prevention – alerts for potential adverse drug events
- Efficiency – less time dedicated to the process of writing and refilling prescriptions
The E-Prescribing incentive is available to professionals who are successful electronic prescribers. Similar to the PQRI incentive, the reporting periods are one year in length and the incentive is based on the covered services furnished during the reporting year.
